a day on the bay turns into a dramatic rescue scene.

two pleasure boaters suffer major injuries after a collision with a ferry. it hurts me because she was like a sister to me. >> a massive apartment fire takes the life of a little girl and treasure island ever night. why no one was able to save her. and new information tonight on just how bad the destruction would have been if that meteor that slammed into russia made a direct hit on an american city. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. two people are hospitalized, one in critical condition, after a collision between a bay area commuter ferry and a pleasure boat. it happened in raccoon strait between tiburon and angel island around 4:30 this afternoon. kpix 5's don knapp tells us the ferry wasn't heavily damaged and went back into service. don? >> reporter: the ms san francisco remaps tied up here at the -- remains tied up here at the ferry terminal in san francisco. we see doors open and we see people on board presumably the

investigation continues. they're trying to determine what might have happened on the bay and who's at fault. at about 8:15 we watched several coast guard personnel leave the ms san francisco presumably after they concluded at least part of their investigation. here's what we know about the accident so far. around 4:30 this afternoon on the side of raccoon straits this ferry the san francisco was struck by a 22-foot pleasure boat as the ferry was headed from sausalito to san francisco. while none of the 500 passengers on the ferry were injured. two people on board the smaller boat were apparently seriously hurt. emergency medical personnel worked on the victims and the damaged boat as it headed for tiburon. there, they were placed on board helicopter and airlifted to a hospital. it's standard procedure for the captain of the ferry to be clog and alcohol tested after the -- drug and alcohol tested after the accident. the five crew members were not drug tested or placed on leave. the ferry service will resume tomorrow as usual and it's

expected the ms san francisco will be back in service by then. obviously now there's still number of questions to be answered and i hope learn more -- we hope to learn more as the week goes on. a woman hit by a muni bus this surgeon is expected to sur -- afternoon is expected to survive with serious injuries. it happened late this afternoon. a spokeswoman says the woman was struck by the side of a 46th avenue bus. her injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening. the bus driver will undergo the usual testing done after the incidents. the young girl is dead and 22 other people are homeless after the apartment fire on treasure aid. san francisco fire rues -- island. san francisco fire crews were called to mariner drive last night. as kpix 5 anne makovec tells us, people trying to rescue the little girl were forced back by the heat and smoke. >> everybody wasegooses screaming and you know being

really -- was just screaming and you know being really loud. nobody knew what was happening. >> reporter: this neighbor describes the scene shot in the cell phone video as a fire broke out in this apartment just after midnight. killing a 10-year-old girl on the second floor. >> had a lot of life you know. always happy. and she's gone now. >> reporter: family friend otis brotten had to stop the little girl's father from rushing in. >> he was trying to go back in the fire to get his daughter. >> reporter: but the fire was coming out of all windows and doors. >> but it wasn't nothing me and him could do because the house was engulfed in flames -- and my main concern was getting him away from there. >> reporter: by the time firefighters got here, they couldn't save her either. >> every angle we approached. we had fire. so we tried from the front. we put ladders up in the rear and then we ended up breaching the walls on the two buildings on either side and we went through that way. >> reporter: when two firefighters did get inside they fell through the second floor. they were both injured but will

be okay. six people lived in the apartment, a total of 22 are now displaced from the building. >> it was just crazy. how we looked outside and we seen that big fire. >> reporter: 9-year-old neighbor joy meade considers the girl who died identified as corlina a dear friend. >> it breaks my heart. it hurts my heart. it hurts me because like i said, she doesn't like -- like she was like a sister to me. >> reporter: the cause of this fire appears to be accidental but firefighters have not yet been able to determine exactly how it started. on treasure island. anne makovec, kpix 5. new video tonight of a fire in pacifica that damaged several cars. this is from kpix 5 viewer katie kelly. the fire was reported at an auto towing yard on palmetto avenue this morning. by the time firefighters got there it had spread from the cars to an outbuilding. north county fire officials say windy conditions made the fire

difficult to put out. no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation. now that fugitive cop killer christopher dorner is dead the focus is on the man hunt that led to the final moments. cbs reporter carter evans tells us what authorities are saying about that day. >> reporter: authorities are now releasing more details about christopher dorner's final hours. we were caught in the crossfire. a gun battle that lasted nearly an hour. then silence. s.w.a.t. team leader greg hebert. >> there was no response from the suspect. none. no movement. and we felt that based upon his behavior that he was laying in wait for us. >> reporter: with daylight fading the team deployed a powerful form of tear gas known as a burner. the cabin caught fire and as the flames grew larger. >> we heard a distinction single gunshot come from inside the house. >> the information we have right now seems to indicate that the wound that took

dorner's life was self- inflicted. >> reporter: he killed himself. less clear is whether the fire was deliberately set. >> you indicated on wednesday that you did not intentionally burn that cabin down to get mr. dorner out. audio we recorded there suggests differently. >> i stand by that remark. >> we did not intentionally burn that cabin down. i would suggest to you that those comments were made by somebody away from the tactical team. >> reporter: the sheriff is also facing questions about the early days of the massive man hunt. on february 8th he briefed the news media. >> we have searched the entire area that's within this close proximity. >> reporr: it opportunitied out dorner was inside a condo less than 100 feet away the whole time overlooking the sheriff's command post. >> i don't believe that we made any mistakes at this point. the search itself, our deputy sheriffs performed flawlessly. >> reporter: before the rampage ended dorner killed four people

including is san bernardino sheriff's deputy on the final day. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. new details tonight on the power of that meteor that slammed into russia friday morning local time. [ sirens ] scientists say the three ton space rock had the potential to level an entire city if it had made a direct hit. cbs reporter tatiana anderson explains how much worse the damage would have been if the meteor hit a more populated area. >> reporter: people in chelyabinsk, russia are cleaning up after a meteor exploded over the region friday. the blast damaged more than 4,000 buildings. this man says his aquarium cracked and the glass on the door broke into pieces. the governor wants them all replaced within a week because this area is so cold.

nasa estimates the meteor exploded with the force of at least 20 hiroshima atomic bombs. >> if this amount of energy had been detonated at ground level, instead of ten miles up, it would have probably leveled a -- every single building in an area the size of chicago. >> reporter: local officials say the explosion injured more than 1,000 people and caused about $33 million in damage. cameras captured the meteor in the sky over russia. now crews are trying to find fragments in a lake about 50 miles from the town. scientists say an event of this magnitude happens about once every hundred years but they say it's not uncommon for meteors to impact the planet more often. >> we are hit by about 100 tons of space debris every day. >> reporter: the explosion in russia and an asteroid that just missed earth has people looking up. late friday, some in the san francisco bay area reported seeing a fireball streaking through the sky.

experts say it was likely another meteor. but the three events are unrelated. tatiana anderson for cbs news. for thousands of passengers aboard carnival triumph it was a giant relief when the disabled ship finally pulled into an alabama port thursday and while the nightmare voyage may be over for passengers the cruise lines is facing a new ordeal. the texas woman filed lawsuit seeking damages for what she says she endured on the trip. the complaint describes the triumph as a floating hell. one lawyer told cnn passengers may have some recourse. >> the cruise lines can be liable for various things with -- associated with these types of actions including personal injuries, physical injuries, and in some cases psychological injuries as well. >> carnival is offering each of triup's passengers $500 and a full refund for the trip. meanwhile an investigation into what happened could take

blade runner says he is numb with shock over his girlfriend's murder. oscar pistorius is still in custody charged with shooting model reeva steenkamp. cbs reporter kelly cob yay yea says the 26-year-old family believes it was a tragic accident. >> reporter: lawyers for oscar pistorius met with him today as did his grandmother at the pretoria police station where he's been held since arrest on valentine's day. speaking on the family's behalf his uncle arnold pistorius. >> our entire family is devastated we are in a state of total shock. >> reporter: the upscale home where girlfriend reeva steenkamp was found dead is still taped off. she was reportedly shot four times through a closed bathroom door. with a gun owned by pistorius. early reports suggested the hero athlete thought he was shooting an intruder. south africa has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world. 40 murdered a day on average. millions live in gated communities with panic alarms

and guns. last november, pistorius tweeted that he mistook the washington machine for a robber -- washing machine for a robber and quote -- prosecutors say this was murder not a mistake. while pistorius didn't yet enter a plea the family says -- >> we have no doubt here is no substance for their allegations. >> reporter: reeva steenkamp, 29, was on the verge of superstardom in south africa. a successful model with a new reality tv show that aired tonight. the producers decided to go ahead despite her death. the family agreed. even as they plan her private memorial. uncle mike steenkamp -- >> i thought she and her family getting over this shortly that's going to be long, long- term reconciliation. >> reporter: pistorius wept during the first court

appearance yesterday will be back in court on tuesday for a bail hearing. his lawyers are expected to argue for his release. cbs news, london. a conclave to elect the next pope could start sooner than march 15th. pope benedict stunned the world this week by announcing his retirement effective february 28th. he's the first pontiff in 600 years to step down and is staying in office until death. church rules say the conclave is to start 15 to 20 days after the papsy becomes vacant but -- papacy becomes vacant but the vatican is trying the waive the rules. the pope though that has to approve to change before he resigns. gas prices are not expected to go down anytime soon. the average price for a gallon of regular nationwide is $3.67. that's an increase of 12 crepts in the past week alone. experts say gas prices normally
